Many people don’t take power walking very seriously. When I used to see people power walking I would think to myself, “why are they wasting their time?” Yet I had never tried it before. It wasn’t until I tried it myself, that I realized how effective it can be.

Power-walking can actually be as tiring or even more tiring than jogging. It uses different muscles and works your body in a different way. When you jog, you’re using a lot of forward momentum, take long strides, and your legs bend and spring a lot to keep you moving. It’s a very natural feeling because we’ve done it all our lives. Power-walking on the other hand feels very different. You don’t use your forward momentum nearly as much, you keep your strides short, and you don’t spring much.

Your speed in power-walking is determined solely by how quickly you can move your legs back and forth. This movement can feel stiff and unnatural at first, but after doing it for a while, it begins to feel more normal. The muscle required to do this is tremendous, power-walking as quickly as possible is difficult and tiring. The muscles it works the most are your thighs and your calves. Your arms also get some exercise.

Set a route for yourself and see how quickly your can power walk it without breaking into a run. When you power-walk quickly you will feel a natural tendency to want to run. Try to resist from running. Time yourself, and try to beat your time on the next round. It takes a lot of effort to keep up your speed, but it will be a great workout for your legs.

You could also power-walk on a home treadmill. Treadmills are great for power-walking because you can see how quickly you can go before breaking into a jog. If you don’t have a treadmill it would be a great idea to get one. A great site to find and compare different treadmill models and receive discounts would be here:www.treadmillcomparison.com

As you do this, you will find yourself walking quicker everywhere you go. Your walking muscles will be more developed and you will become quicker and quicker at power-walking. An amusing challenge is to have a power-walking race with on of your friends.
